The story behind the lodge

A child’s dream…

This project is the fruit of a little girl’s imagination and a beautiful friendship of over thirty years. It is the story of two friends who, once in their fifties, decided to embark on an adventure reflective of their values and their dreams.
Julie was born in the small village of Rwinkwavu in eastern Rwanda, while Olivier grew up in Congo (Democratic Republic). Both of mixed backgrounds, passionate about Africa, and convinced of the continent’s potential, they began developing a project centred around the exchange of knowledge and ideas. Although their paths were different, they brought them together and adorned them with the same ambition; that of shining a light on the magnetic beauty of Africa, while striving towards the creation of a more balanced world.

A rich mining site

Rwinkwavu was once a rich mining site, built and managed by Julie’s father. It was inhabited by different communities and was equipped with quite a modern infrastructure for its time. For many years, it was a hub of attraction for the entire region, but when Julie’s father died, the mine went bankrupt and the village fell into decline.

A couple of years later, when Julie returns to her native village, she once again sees the old colonial house where she spent her childhood. It is only a shadow of what it once was, and Julie takes note. During a long conversation about the world and its madness, she tells Olivier about the abandoned house, and a project is born.

They quickly start elaborating on a way to rehabilitate Julie’s old family house - strategically located along the road leading to Akagera Park, one of the 2 tourist poles of Rwanda -  and transform it into an eco-lodge...
