At Rutété Eco Lodge, sustainability is not a marketing concept—it is a long-term commitment embedded in our daily operations and our relationship with the surrounding communities of Rwinkwavu. Our approach combines agroecological production, local value creation, and inclusive social action.

— Promoting Agroecological Food Systems
While we are not yet fully self-sufficient, Rutété Eco Lodge is committed to producing the majority of the food consumed on site through agroecological methods.

Our large agroecological garden and integrated farm—including chickens, rabbits, and pigs—are designed to function as a regenerative system. We prioritize soil health, biodiversity, natural fertilization, crop rotation, and low-impact practices. This model reduces dependency on external supply chains while strengthening local food resilience.
By cultivating fruits, vegetables, and local species adapted to the territory, we aim to demonstrate that sustainable hospitality can coexist with responsible agricultural production.
— Adding Value Through Local Processing
To reduce waste and create additional income opportunities, Rutété Eco Lodge plan to establish a solar-powered drying facility to process agricultural surplus into dried fruits and vegetables.
This initiative is carried out in collaboration with men and women from the local community. By transforming surplus harvests into storable, marketable products, we want to:
- Reduce post-harvest losses
- Extend product shelf life
- Create local employment opportunities
- Support income diversification
This small-scale transformation unit strengthens the local agricultural value chain and promotes circular economy principles.
— Inclusive Employment & Social Support
Our commitment to community empowerment goes beyond agriculture.
Rutété Eco Lodge employs a man with a mental disability who, through stable employment, has achieved financial autonomy and now benefits from regular medical follow-up. His integration into the team reflects our belief that dignified work is a foundation for inclusion and personal development.
We also support the long-term education of a young deaf and mute woman from the village. Her journey began when a German guest encountered her story and chose to sponsor her studies. Rutété Eco Lodge acts as an intermediary and guarantor: we identify and coordinate with the appropriate school, advance tuition payments, and ensure the sponsor is reimbursed transparently.
Beyond administrative support, we are committed to accompanying her educational journey through to university level. We remain present, attentive, and engaged in her progress. This initiative reflects our belief that sustainable tourism must generate tangible, long-term opportunities for young people in rural communities.
— A Holistic Model of Responsible Tourism
Through agroecology, inclusive employment, educational support, and local partnerships, Rutété Eco Lodge strives to build a model of tourism that generates measurable social and environmental impact.
Our objective is not only to host visitors, but to contribute to a resilient local ecosystem—economic, agricultural, and human—where growth is shared and dignity is preserved.
