Welcome to Rutete

In eastern Rwanda, just 20 minutes from the main entrance of Akagera National Park and a two-hour drive from Kigali, Rutété Eco Lodge offers a rare immersion in the heart of a land where nature and memory echo one another. More than a place to stay, Rutété Eco Lodge is a living place of transmission, born of a family history and a sincere commitment to the land, local know-how, and responsible tourism. Discover the values that guide the project, the women and men who bring it to life, and the sustainable ecosystem it nurtures day after day.

Within the village lies a cassiterite mine, still in operation today, founded by Julienne Toch’s father. A visionary and builder, he also had a colonial-style house constructed slightly apart, which has since become the heart of Julienne’s project.

This restored family home, preserving its original soul and architecture, is surrounded by four independent bungalows inspired by traditional African architecture, with their conical thatched roofs. Subtly modernized and reinterpreted, they are built from local materials—earth, stone, and thatch. In addition, perched on higher ground within the property, the Loft was designed as a true penthouse in the heart of nature. Its raw, minimalist architecture offers generous volumes and a contemporary atmosphere, ideal for groups of friends or large families seeking space and serenity.

These accommodations are nestled within a forest garden cultivated according to permaculture principles. Not to be forgotten is the lodge’s small farm, an integral part of the experience. Guests encounter the animals that live to the rhythm of the place and discover a simple, nature-respectful way of life, where the land, the seasons, and all living things take center stage.

The Rutété Eco Lodge’s guest table celebrates reimagined Rwandan cuisine enriched with international influences, crafted from produce grown in the property’s garden and farm. Each meal highlights the richness and simplicity of the local terroir.

Supported by a predominantly local team, the lodge showcases the region’s artisanal expertise. The furniture, fittings, and many decorative elements are designed and crafted on site by local artisans who work at the lodge daily, giving each space a unique identity deeply rooted in its environment.

A beautiful garden which they use for their nightly dinners, which are absolutely delicious. The carrot and pumpkin soup is spectacular.
